Foxgrove Fab 6 take on The Fred Whitton Challenge
The Fred Whitton Challenge is one of the most popular sportives in the UK and is also famed as being particularly difficult. Riders rank it alongside European events such as the Marmotte in terms of difficulty.
The ride is a real challenge and everyone who completes it has a true sense of achievement. The Saddleback Fred Whitton Challenge is a charity event in honour of the late Fred Whitton who was a great advocate for cycle sport in Cumbria and North Lancashire. It is with respect to Fred and his ideals that the event remains just that, ‘a challenge’. Fred, who died aged just 50 in 1998, was an extremely popular member of the Lakes Road Club.
The Fred Whitton Challenge consists of a 112 mile sportive around the Lake District, starting at Grasmere and taking in climbs of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott & Wrynose passes.
The very top riders complete the route in just under six hours but eleven hours and over are not uncommon for the average Sportive rider. This is a very tough route and going on rider feedback the hardest one day ride in the UK, the event includes all the Lakeland passes, one with a 30% gradient and this comes at 98 miles.

Two clubs combine to tackle mammoth events
Saturday 31st March saw the coming together of two great local cycling clubs. Bigfoot and Foxgrove CC.
10 members training for some epic events coming up. Not least the infamous Dragon Devil ride in the Brecon Beacons. Which will see our two clubs merge again to tackle 305km and 4,000 metres of climbing.

We shared many moments yesterday some struggles and some highs like sitting outside around a huge round table at a lovely pub eating poached eggs with avocado on toast making new friends all in the drizzle. Mamils!
Congratulations to our very own Don!
Congratulations to our very own Don who has cycled thousands of miles to raise money for this great charity/facility. Also a huge thanks to Perry, Steve and lots of others who helped Don raise over £10k over the last 3 years to get this great centre open.
Bromley Mencap's Lodge in Norman Park (Bromley Common entrance). This facility offers disabled adults the opportunity to learn new skills to prepare them for employment in three key areas – horticulture, catering and cycle maintenance.
The coffee shop is now open Saturday & Sunday's and they have a quality coffee machine - so stop by and support them when you're next out on the road and need a coffee stop!
